Conifer Tree

A big strong lumberjack
Hacks all day at the base
Of a conifer tree
The tree seems unfazed
Unmoved by this fate
It stands upright and faces
Each axe blow as it comes
A regular thumping noise
As the metal slowly carves
Its way into the bark
Tears wood from wood
and still the tree
Looks on ahead
Carries itself
With a sort of
Pride
As though nothing in the world
Could topple it over
Even as the man below
Chops chops chops

At some point soon
Its trunk will gave way
Its body will fail
The axe will strike for the last time
Then
The conifer will stand still for a moment
The forest will stand still for a moment
Then
It will fall
Descending gracefully through the air
Like an acrobat
Like a raindrop
Like an arrow
Like a diving seagull
and the Earth
Will rise up to meet it
To cushion it
To embrace it
To reclaim it
Back as its child

I want to die
Like a conifer tree dies
