Where Words Come From

At the annual family dinner
My sister’s daughter
Uncle, she asked
Where do words come from?

I told her
There is a little green meadow
Filled to the brim with magic
And there words are imagined

I told her
The deaf don’t value music
The living don’t value death
Find something to value and hold it tight little girl

I told her
Lines meet only once
Then part for infinity
Be a dot because lines are lonely

I told her
There are more things
In your tiny head
Than in the universe’s trillion limbs
