The Escalator

We are placed
At the base
Of a downward running escalator.
Grey metallic mechanism
Buzzing and clinking as it runs
Into the ground.

Nobody quiet knows why
We begin to climb
Against the tide of this contraption,
But we do
With so much power.
We override it and climb
Higher, higher,
Each step more assured than the last.
And the escalator quickens
But our feet are still young and strong
We beat it,
And up we go.

Past the midpoint
Huffing and puffing
Every step, three breaths.
At the top now
We can see the last stair,
There it cascades down and is replaced by a sister from behind
And the sight of the end
Gives us a bite,
We realize
We had never considered where we were going
We had just climbed and climbed,
Where does the escalator end?
What is at the top?
But it’s too late for questions now
Make a final dash, we can do it,
To the finish line.

But Oh
What is this?
Our muscles are weakened
Our body has aged
And now the escalator it seems
Is finally winning
And we go down
And down
Back towards the ground
Slowly at first
And then at a pace to rival a diver
And the bottom is near
And now the bottom is here
We are back where we started.

We are placed
At the base
Of a downward running escalator.
Grey metallic mechanism
Buzzing and clinking as it runs
Into the ground.

Nobody quiet knows why
We begin to climb
Against the tide of this contraption,
